nurse with student

O-School nurses play a vital role in fulfilling the school’s commitment to care for the whole child.

The school nurse is available to tend to any illnesses or injuries that occur during the school day. Should an illness or injury occur that cannot be adequately addressed with first aid or approved over the counter medication, the nurse will immediately contact the family to arrange care with their community provider.

It is important for parents and students to note that the O-School’s medical team is not meant to replace a child’s primary physician, nor can all medical conditions be treated at the school given the limitations of the settings and staff.

The O-School works with The University of Chicago’s Department of Developmental Pediatrics, under the direction of Peter J. Smith, MD., and consults with Dr. Smith, regarding any medical protocols and matters of student health.
