O-School Transition Learning Center Program

The Transition Learning Center Program allows students to begin experiencing adult life activities both in the classroom and community while having the encouragement of instructional and support staff including therapists and a transition coach. When and where appropriate, students will participate in a host of school and community-based opportunities including educational and recreational activities, along with (non-paid) internships. These experiences are intended to foster an understanding of the expectations and responsibilities associated with adult life so participants can better navigate college, the world of work, and/or independent living. Students will also be able to explore their postsecondary options, set realistic and attainable goals, and begin practicing their vision for life as a young adult. The program will also help students and families identify and make connections with adult services and supports that might be needed in the future.

The program is housed on the second floor of the O-School in a suite complete with an open concept classroom and kitchen, offices, and small meeting spaces.

1. Non-diploma young adults between the ages of 17 - 21 with average to above-average IQs who are about to meet or have already satisfied high school graduation requirements
2. Exhibits persistent mental health challenges such as anxiety or depression and/or has a diagnosis of autism
3. Exhibits the capacity to self-regulate, and complete work independently. TLC students do not pose a threat to themselves or others.
4. Must be committed to fully engage in a predictable, structured transition program that is aimed toward preparing young adults for independence
5. Uses and relies on relationships to manage challenging situations
6. Must have goals and the ability to attend college and/or work

Students may enter the Transition Learning Center Program after completing the minimum requirements for high school graduation. Upon verification of high school credit completion, students may participate in their commencement ceremonies but cannot accept their high school diplomas. They may, however, receive a certificate of attendance in lieu of an actual high school diploma if issued by the serving school.

• Full-day program operating from 9 a.m. – 3:15 p.m., Mondays through Fridays
• Structured curriculum comprised of transitional topics and support in strengthening core academic skills, along with health and wellness activities customized to address students’ needs and IEP goals
• Community-based experiences (i.e., internships, college courses, field trips, service learning)
